  Infertility Treatment in Edison

When you first suspect that you have a fertility problem, the resulting emotions are often overwhelming and devastating. Dr. Eric Daiter feels that it is important for you torealize two truths about infertility: first, that you are not the only couple to experience this situation; and that effective treatments, such as in vitro fertilization ( IVF) andinfertility drugs, are constantly being developed and improved upon. Our New Jersey-area patients with the best chances of success are those who are willing to give up all their assumptions and commit themselves fully to accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Infertility is not as uncommon as most people believe. It is estimated that up to 15 percent of couples in the United States can benefit from IVF, infertility drugs, or someother method of fertility treatment. In recent years, women seeking to establish their career before giving birth have driven the numbers even higher.

As the numbers of Americans seeking infertility drugs and IVF have increased, the New Jersey Center for Fertility has been able to harness revolutionary new techniques tosafely and successfully allow couples to conceive.

Most of the couples that visit our fertility center have never had a complete set of diagnostic tests to determine the cause of their infertility. As many as 95 percent of fertility difficulties can be classified into one of three causes:

Ovulation – Problems occur when the maturation and release of eggs is impaired due to age, hormonal imbalances, or past surgeries.

Male Factor – Responsible for up to 50 percent of infertility cases, problems with sperm may result from testicular injury, use of certain medications, or physical
abnormalities.

Pelvic Factor – The physical characteristics of a woman’s pelvic area may be hostile to conception. Problems in this area include endometriosis and blockage of the
fallopian tubes.

Results from a recent study in Germany indicate that adding acupuncture to the treatment protocol of IVF patients greatly enhances their chances of becoming pregnant. While the physiologic mechanisms by which acupuncture may affect the uterus and reproductive system have not been identified, the researchers found that as a practical matter, at least among their small study population, the technique worked.

In a study of 160 patients undergoing in vitro fertilization, researchers utilized acupuncture, an important element in the 4,000-year-old tradition of Chinese medicine, before and after the embryo transfers of half their patients. The patients, who were all required to have embryos of good quality, were evenly and randomly divided into two groups similar in age and diagnosis.

The group receiving acupuncture treatments had one treatment before transfer and another after embryos had been transferred to their uteruses. Sterile needles were inserted into the patients' bodies at very specific points. According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, energy flows through the body along defined pathways, or meridians. Acupuncture is a means of influencing this energy to induce a desired physiological effect. Points were chosen for these patients along the spleen and stomach/colon meridians in an effort to positively influence blood flow and energy to the uterus and to provide a sedative effect. Additional needles were inserted in the patients' ears to influence the uterus and stabilize the endocrine system.

Needles were left in place for 25 minutes while the patients rested. The control group also rested, lying still for 25 minutes after embryo transfer, as part of the IVF protocol.

The difference between pregnancy rates for the two groups was notable. In the control group, 26% of the women became pregnant, while 42% of the patients in the acupuncture group became pregnant.

If you are having trouble getting pregnant, you are not alone. Approximately 10% of couples have trouble conceiving. A fertile couple has a 20-25% chance of achieving a pregnancy each month. After one year of trying, about 90% of couples who attempt to get pregnant will be successful. The remaining 10% of couples who are unsuccessful after one year are said to have infertility and deserve an evaluation. If the woman is over 35 years of age or has very irregular cycles, the evaluation should be done sooner.

Approximately one third of infertility is due to female factors, one third is due to male factors and one third is due to a combination of female and male factors or is unexplained. The basic evaluation for infertility includes determining if 1.) the woman is releasing a healthy egg 2.) the fallopian tubes are open and the uterine cavity is normal and 3.) the man’s sperm is normal. The most common treatments fall into three categories: 1.) ovulation therapy with or without intrauterine insemination, 2.) surgery to correct problems with the tubes or uterus and 3.) in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Donor eggs, donor sperm or donor embryos are used in certain circumstances as well. Couples with the best chance of success are those who have had a previous pregnancy or who have been trying to conceive for less than 3 years. Women who are younger than 35 years old have a better chance of getting pregnant than older women. Overall at least half of patients who undergo fertility treatments will be successful.
